     Broccoli 'Belstar' - 66 days; Medium size head, strong, stress resistant

     'Alibi' - 49 days; Pickler type, for fresh eating or pickling, compact vines, high yield

     'Ace' - 50 days to green, 70 days to red; Northern New England standard for bell pepper

     'Baby Bear' - 105 days; deep orange, 1.5-2.5 lb, great handles, "naked seeds great for roasting, very good for for pies, excellent winter storage. Kids love them!

     'Howden' - 115 days, the classic New England Jack O'Lantern, 20+ lbs.

Tomato

     'Bellstar' - 65 days; Plum type (4 oz), determinate (bush) growth habit

     'Big Beef' - 70 days; Large red globe (over 8 oz), indeterminate (staking needed) growth habit

     'Valley Girl' - 65 days; Medium (7-8 oz) red globe, determinate (bush) growth habit

About our Vegetable & Herb Plants

We grow all the above varieties from seed using no chemical pesticides and minimal chemical fertilizers. For 2009, we are using exclusively seeds from Johnny's Selected Seeds, 955 Benton Avenue, Winslow, Maine. We are doing this for two reasons:

     1) The importance of supporting local Maine business for the greater good of us all

     2) In 2008, we used all Johnny's seeds in our personal garden (this is the first time since 1975, when Ernie began vegetable gardening, that we have ever used a sole seed source). Last year's garden was the best we have ever grown, in Maine or anywhere else. We wanted to pass this good fortune along to you all.

So far in 2009, we have noticed incredibly high germination rates and very uniform growth within each variety. This means more large, vigorous, uniform plants to choose from. We grow all of our vegetable and herb transplants individually in 3" pots. They are given extra space several times during their growth as they increase in size before being hardened off in our walk-in cold frame. They are much larger and tougher than most plants grown in a 6-pak and take about 20% more space to be grown this way. In addition, you don't have to buy 6 'Big Beef" tomato plants if you only want two. Our customers can purchase what their needs are, not what a grower decides to grow. Check them out.
